Affordable Care Act options for the self-employed

Self-employed people throughout the nation are attempting to determine how to approach the Affordable Care Act.

If you are self-employed and have no employees, you are not considered an employer under the new health care law, and are therefore entitled to shop for new health insurance through the individual marketplace.

This holds true even if you "hire" contractors on occasion.

Each state, including Illinois, offers its own health insurance marketplace for those seeking coverage under the new federal law. Through your state’s marketplace, you can compare plans in an apples-to-apples manner, seeing the differences in premiums, coverage, deductibles and other plan components.

On the other hand, the federal marketplace website, as well as a number of state marketplace sites, have been experiencing glitches preventing many people from signing up for coverage under the new law. As a result, many people are turning to insurance agents and brokers for help navigating the new health insurance terrain.
