Your insurance provider can reimburse you for all expenses incurred after an illness or accident or pay the medical facility directly.

There are four main types of health insurance in Lombard, IL. They are:

Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO)

Under this plan, your health care services are covered only if you use medical facilities and practitioners that are listed in the plan’s network. You may be covered for care outside the network only in the event of an emergency.

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)

The HMO plan covers only care from doctors who work for the HMO. It generally excludes out-of-network care coverage, except in an emergency. The policyholder may be required to live or work in the HMO service area to be eligible for coverage.

Point of Service (POS)

Here, policyholders are entitled to a discount if they visit medical facilities or doctors who belong to the plan’s network. You must get a referral from your primary care doctor to see a specialist.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)

For PPO, you are entitled to a discount if you use providers in the plan’s network. Medical services from doctors and hospitals outside of the network can be availed without a referral but at an additional cost.

The importance of health insurance can never be overstated, as it acts as a safety net that covers you and your loved ones from unexpected medical expenses.

As medical technology improves and new diseases are discovered every day, medical treatment costs continue to skyrocket. These expenses are not limited only to hospitals; your health insurance coverage also covers costs for doctor’s consultation, diagnostic tests, ambulance charges, operation theatre costs, medicines, and room rent. If you or any of your loved ones are battling a serious health condition, it could put a significant strain on your finances if you are not well prepared.

Do I need health insurance?

Yes. Everyone needs health insurance because it provides you and your family affordable access to high-quality care. Accidents occur all the time, and if you do not have adequate protection, you may have to pay exorbitant medical bills.

Can I be penalized for not having health insurance?

Since 2019, there is no federal penalty for not having health insurance. You can no longer be fined for not having a health insurance policy.

Will I be eligible for health insurance coverage if I smoke?

Yes. Smokers are eligible for the same health insurance coverage as non-smokers. However, your plan can cost up to 50% more than usual. Staying smoke-free can help you save money, and providers usually require you to defer from smoking for at least a year to qualify for non-smoker rates.

How is individual health insurance different from group health insurance?

An individual plan protects one person but can include your nuclear family. Group health insurance provides coverage for a group of persons, like employees at a company or members of an organization. Employees opting for group health insurance are guaranteed low-cost health insurance in IL, regardless of their medical conditions.

Will my health insurance rates increase as I get older?

Yes. Older policyholders tend to be charged significantly higher than younger ones. This is no surprise, as the older you get, the higher will be your health risks resulting in higher premiums.

Can I add dependents to my existing health insurance policy?

Yes. You can add your newborn to your policy, but adding other dependents is only allowed during the application process unless you have a qualifying event. Qualifying events include marriage, birth, divorce, moving to a new zip code, loss of employer coverage, and adoption.
