Getting a DUI can be a scary experience. It’s even more frightening to learn what a DUI can do to your car insurance. A DUI will put you in the high-risk category with most auto insurance carriers. This will make getting an affordable policy a lot more difficult. It won’t be impossible, but you must make some concessions.
What Happens After a DUI?
After a DUI, you will need to make sure you follow the court’s ruling to the letter. If you are allowed to keep your license, you may be required to install a breathalyzer in your car. You may also be required to complete an alcohol treatment program or join an AA group.
File for an SR-22
If your license was suspended, you may have to apply for an SR-22. An SR-22 is a certificate of financial responsibility that is directly linked to your auto insurance policy. Your insurance company will file this form with the state and guarantee that you have the minimum required insurance.
The first few months after a DUI will be the hardest. Once you have completed all of the requirements for your court case, you can begin to look for a better insurance policy. Even though you are a high-risk client, you can still compare rates and find a comfortable policy.
Look for Discounts
Insurance companies offer discounts to all of their clients. Take a defensive driver course, bundle your home and auto policies, and other possible discounts are available if you are eligible for them.
Abide by the Court’s Ruling
It’s important to keep your insurance agent in the loop as you progress through your sentence. Once you have completed your obligation to the court, your insurance agent may be able to get you a better policy at a lower rate as long as you go without any more tickets or infractions.
