How to Help the Home Insurance Claim Process

How to Help the Home Insurance Claim Process

Take these steps to make your home insurance claim go smoother.

If you’ve never filed a home insurance claim before, then the whole process might seem stressful and overwhelming.  However, it doesn’t need to be.  There are several things that you can do to make your claim proceed more smoothly.  Here’s what you can do to assist your home insurance claim.

  • Stop the Damage from Getting Worse

Whether you were the victim of vandalism or your home was damaged in a fire, there is always the potential for damages to get worse.  All standard homeowners insurance policies require the policyholder to take reasonable actions to protect the property from further damage.  For example, if your home ‘s windows were blown out by a fire, then you should board them up to deter burglars and prevent weather damage to the inside of your home.  Most homeowners insurance policies will offer coverage for reasonable repairs made solely to protect against further damage, so long as the initial cause of damage is a covered peril.

  • Report the Claim Quickly

Most homeowners insurance policies include a clause that requires you to report claims “promptly.”  Generally, this means reporting a claim within 24-hours.  Please keep in mind that for claims related to a break-in or theft, you need to contact the police and file a report before calling your insurer.  This is because your insurer will ask you about the officer you spoke to as well as your case number.

  • Be Available for Contact

Processing a claim requires time and effort from both you and your insurer.  The best way to ensure that your claim is handled quickly and efficiently is by staying in contact with your provider and making yourself available to your claims adjuster.  By making yourself available, you can take care of things on your end quickly, which will help push the claim through.
