Summer pool safety tips for your kids.
With the heat of summer at its peak, there’s nothing better than cooling off in the pool. While playing in the pool is certainly refreshing, it’s important to remember that it can pose a danger to kids and inexperienced swimmers. To avoid any serious accidents, make sure you employ these summer pool safety tips.
- Actively Supervise Your Kids
Children should never be allowed in or near the pool without an adult to watch them. When you are monitoring your kids, your focus should be on the task at hand. Even a momentary distraction can cause you to react too slowly to a swimming emergency. When supervising young swimmers, you should be close to the pool and ready to react at a moment’s notice. If there are very inexperienced swimmers in the pool, then make sure that you get into the water with them, so you are right there if they need you.
- Teach Your Children Safe Swimming Practices
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends swimming lessons for all children aged four and older. While early swimming lessons are not enough to completely prevent a swimming emergency, they are a great way for children to learn some drowning prevention maneuvers. In addition to swimming lessons, it’s important to discuss pool rules with your kids. For instance, they should know not to run by the pool, not to enter the pool by themselves, not to get in the water without floatation devices, and so on.
- Keep Your Pool Covered
When your pool is not in use, you should cover it with a rigid safety cover. This will ensure that your kids do not accidentally fall into the pool or attempt to go swimming without your permission. Make sure that your safety cover fits securely over your pool’s entire surface. If there are gaps, then your child might slip into them and could get trapped under the cover.
