Learn How to Replace Your Windshield Wiper Blades

This winter, learn how you can replace your car’s windshield wiper blades.

While commonly overlooked, your windshield wipers are an important component of your car’s safety system.  If your windshield wipers aren’t working properly, it can be difficult to see driving hazards in the rain or snow.  This winter, stay safe by learning how you can replace your car’s windshield wiper blades.

When Should You Replace Your Wiper Blades?

Generally, you should replace your windshield wiper blades every six months to a year.  However, depending on your weather conditions, you might have to change them more frequently.  If you notice that your wiper blades aren’t making contact with your windshield, or if they are beginning to squeak, skip, smear, or streak, it’s time to replace your blades.

Step 1: Measure

Measure the length of your wiper blades or consult your car’s owner’s manual to ensure that you are using the correct blade size.

Step 2: Remove Old Wipers

To remove your car’s old wiper blades, lift the wiper arms away from your car’s windshield.  Then, depress the small tab on the underside of the wiper.  As the tab is depressed, slide the wiper blade off of the arm by pulling it downwards.

Step 3: Attach New Blades

To attach the new wiper blade, pull the wiper blade onto the arm.  You should hear a clicking sound when the blade locks into place.  Then, lower the arm back onto your windshield.  Repeat this process for your other wiper arm.

Step 4: Test

Finally, test your wipers after installation.  Make sure that the blades effectively clear debris off your windshield without leaving scratches or streaks.
