Look Out for These Common Gaps in Home Insurance

Watch out for these gaps in your home insurance coverage.

While many homeowners assume that their homeowners insurance policy provides adequate coverage for all the threats they might face, this isn’t always the case.  In fact, there could be gaps in your policy that you don’t even know about.  Here are some of the most common coverage gaps that homeowners face.

1) Your Pets

While homeowners insurance generally covers any liability issues that involve your four-legged friends, there are many insurance companies that refuse to cover certain breeds of dogs.  That’s why it’s so important to review your policy to ensure that your furry companion is covered.  If not, then you might have to find a policy that specifically covers your pet.

2) You Home-Based Business

While a standard home insurance policy will cover some aspects of your home-based business, this coverage is minimal at best.  If you want to properly protect your business, then you should get a policy rider or an entirely new policy to cover the equipment, supplies, inventory, employees, and customers involved in your business.

3) Natural Disasters

While a standard homeowners insurance policy will provide coverage for the damages caused by most natural disasters and extreme weather events, certain natural disasters require their own insurance policies.  For instance, you will need separate policies to protect against the risk of flooding and earthquakes.  If you live in areas prone to these hazards, make sure you have the right policies to protect your home.
