Simple Tips to Prevent Skin Cancer

The Skin Cancer Foundation suggests that one in five Americans will get some form of skin cancer during their lives. May is Skin Cancer Awareness month, and the perfect time to learn simple ways to prevent this condition.

  • Apply a quality sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or higher. Reapply the sunscreen every two hours, as well as immediately after swimming.
  • Avoid going out in the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV rays are the most intense. If you must spend time outside during these hours, stay in shaded areas.
  • Cover up with light-weight, light-colored clothing to protect your skin from direct sunlight. Also, wear a wide-brimmed hat and a pair of sunglasses to protect your face and eyes from UV rays.
  • Avoid getting sunburn. Every time your skin is sunburned, it increases the risk of melanoma.

In addition to these tips, examine your skin at least once a month to make sure you don’t have any unexplained moles or lesions.
