Simple Ways to Protect Your Skin This Summer

Sun Protection Tips

With the hot summer season just around the corner, the sun is spending more hours in the sky. While this means more daylight hours to enjoy outside, it also means an increased risk of dangerous sun damage to your skin. The UV rays from the sunshine cannot only cause a painful sunburn, but it can also lead to skin cancer. Keep these sun protection tips in mind to ensure that you know how to protect yourself from the sun.

  • Look for shade – the best way to limit your UV exposure is to find shade whenever you are outside, especially when you are outside between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the UV lights are the strongest. Keep in mind that even when the sky is cloudy, you can still be harmed by the sun’s rays, so find shade.
  • Wear the right clothes – when you are headed outside, make sure to cover as much of your skin as possible with the right clothes. Tightly woven, dark fabric will provide more coverage than light, loosely woven clothes. Keep in mind that while the right clothes will help to protect your skin, it will not protect you from all UV rays, so still take other precautions.
  • Lather up – whenever you are going outside, put on sunscreen that has at least 15 SPF. If you will be outside for a long time, make sure to reapply every two hours, especially if you are swimming or sweating.
  • Wear a hat – a wide brimmed hat will work best to block out even more of the sun’s rays while you are outside. Look for a dark hat that will provide shade for the back of your neck and your chest.
