Try These Suggestions to Avoid Driving Distractions

Learn how you can stay focused as you drive.

While most of us have probably driven while distracted before, it’s important to remember that distracted driving is incredibly dangerous.  If you want to drive more safely, try out these suggestions to help you avoid distractions while you’re behind the wheel.

Put Away Your Phone

When you’re driving, you should only reach for your phone in an absolute emergency.  Otherwise, sending a text, answering a call, playing with your music, and so on diverts your attention from the road.  This distraction could affect your reaction time and could even make you miss a driving hazard completely.  To avoid the temptation of playing with your phone, you should keep it out of reach while you drive.  If you do need to make an emergency call, pull off the road first.

Turn Your Music Down

While some drivers like to blast their music as they drive, this is a dangerous distraction.  Not only can the loud music be disorienting and interrupt your focus, but it could also cause you to miss the sounds of an approaching siren or a warning honk from a nearby vehicle.  If you want to drive more safely, keep your volume turned down so you can better focus.

Review Your Route

Nowadays, most people simply rely on their GPS to navigate for them.  However, straining to hear the spoken directions or study the small digital map requires a lot of attention.  This results in a lack of road awareness.  To prevent your GPS from becoming a distraction, make sure you study your route before you start to drive.  Having a good idea of where you are going will give you confidence and allow you to focus your full attention on the road.
